The first question anyone ever asks about film producers is - what exactly do they do? Even the casual movie fan knows that producers are important figures, but give them five chances to answer that question and you’ll probably get six different answers. In India, ‘They invest money in films’ is the most common answer. But that’s only half the story.
So What Does a Producer Do?
In short, a film producer supervises the start-to-finish process by which a film is made. The key to becoming a producer who is attractive to creative collaborators and financiers alike, is a sound grasp of the stages of the process - from script to screen. Each stage of filmmaking contains dozens of jobs done by dozens of people – all of which must happen smoothly, within a specific timeframe and a specific budget and must reach an audience to make money - making sure all of this happens without a hitch is the producer’s job. Sounds complicated? Well, it can be – but it doesn’t have to be, if you know what you’re doing.
The best film investors and producers know how to start projects in the right way, with a strong creative sense and a sound commercial purpose. Film investment can be done smartly and can show an investor liquidity, sometimes even quicker than a startup can– but it requires an understanding of the entire business from development through to distribution.
